FIFA President Gianni Infantino has dismissed suggestions that political influence played a role in the disciplinary case involving United States striker Folarin Balogun, stressing that FIFA's judicial process remains completely independent.

The clarification comes after U.S. President Donald Trump revealed that he had contacted Infantino regarding Balogun's red-card suspension ahead of the FIFA World Cup knockout stage.

Speaking to reporters, Infantino acknowledged that he regularly communicates with world leaders on matters related to international football, including President Trump. However, he emphasized that those conversations do not affect the decisions made by FIFA's independent disciplinary bodies.

According to Infantino, he informed President Trump that Balogun's case was already being handled through FIFA's established legal procedures and that the final ruling would be made solely by the appropriate judicial authorities.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                              The judicial bodies of FIFA are independent," Infantino said. "I explained that there was an ongoing legal process and that the competent bodies would make the decision in due course. This is how FIFA operates, and it is a principle I will always defend."

The FIFA president also noted that while he reviews disciplinary decisions after they are published, he does not interfere with the process.

"Sometimes I agree with the decisions, and sometimes I don't," Infantino explained. "But I will always respect the autonomy of our judicial bodies. Respecting independent institutions and the rule of law is essential to protecting the integrity of our competitions and FIFA's credibility."

Following the disciplinary review, Balogun has been cleared to play and will be available for the United States as they face Belgium in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16.

The decision is a significant boost for the U.S. national team, with Balogun expected to play a key role as they aim to advance to the quarter-finals.
